我國運用金幣有悠久的前史，早在二千二百年前的戰國時期，楚國就行使“郢爰”等金版錢銀，近年來，先后又出土多枚漢、唐時期的金質錢幣，如五銖、開元通寶等，上述金錢和后朝代中所鑄的一些金質錢，種類不多，它們大多不是流通錢銀，而是特意鑄之，以作奉送之用的賞賜錢，所以鑄造數量均很有限。

我國近代機制金幣則始于清朝晚期，早在光緒中葉時，清廷中既有些官員建議我國行使金幣，如陳熾在《通用金鎊說》中提出“欲收利權，欲興商務，并非鑄金錢不行，金錢之輕重，非仿用金鎊不行”之議，光緒三十年(1904年)戶部為籌款以鑄金幣，特向朝廷提出具體的施行辦法，并由天津造幣總廠于光緒三十二年(1906年)正式試鑄了金幣。

該幣面中間有楷書“大清金幣”四字，上端有“光緒丙午年造”，下端有“庫平一兩”字樣，反面蟠龍，四周繞以云紋，光邊，次年造幣廠又試鑄了“光緒丁未年造”的金幣，除正面的鑄造年份不同，反面的龍圖、云紋、線圈也異，現發現丁未大清銀幣有兩種版別，并且均為齒紋邊。 “大清金幣”雖以試鑄成品，但總因我國藏金有限，終究未能施行流通，今存世也甚少，丙午丁未大清金幣的銀質和丁未紅銅試鑄樣幣，均為僅見之品，應比金幣更為寶貴。

正面鑄有雙線外郭，內圈有聯珠紋。頂邊鑄右讀楷體“光緒丁未年造”六字，底邊右讀為“庫平一兩”。珠圈內部直讀楷體“大清金幣”字樣。幣背鑄有正面五爪金蟠龍一條，祥瑞云朵圍繞周圍，外部兩條，外側為細線條，內側有一聯珠紋圈。大清金幣的造型已接近新式錢幣，但是幣面上的銘鑄仍說明沒有完全脫離“秤量貨幣”體系。大清金幣由于背面圖案為一蟠龍，故俗稱“龍洋”。因鑄行量較小，又屬貴金屬幣，愈顯珍罕，市場價格居高不下，并仍具升值潛力，是收藏者難覓佳品。
