帽頂原為中國遼、金、元代頭盔上的裝飾物。蒙古入主中原，成立元朝，國人逐漸知道并開始佩戴帽頂。之后，明朝依舊有人佩戴帽頂，但這類帽頂，都不是作為官員品級代表出現的，只在清朝帽頂成了官員品級的象征，并對其進行完善和規范。清帽頂主要分為吉服頂和朝冠頂，制作工藝上基本涵蓋了所有當時首飾的制作手法，如鎦金、縲絲、鏤空雕、琺瑯彩等，帽頂底托材質以金銀銅木頭為主，頂珠的各類寶石用以表明品級，有紅寶、藍寶、紅珊瑚、青金、水晶、硨磲、東珠、芙蓉石等，雍正朝改革后基本都變為各色玻璃。作為專項收藏，市面上多見的都是7品、 8品、9品官帽頂，其他品級非常少見，朝冠頂遠遠少于吉服頂。清亡后，部分吉服帽頂流出中國，變成了外國鈴鐺把手，現在國內精品帽頂極少能見到。
