雞血石是辰砂條帶的地開石，其顏色比朱砂還鮮紅。因為它的顏色像雞血一樣鮮紅，所以人們俗稱雞血石。我國最早發現的雞血石是浙江昌化玉巖山雞血石。后來又發現了內蒙古赤峰市巴林右旗的巴林雞血石。20世紀90年代又在陜西、甘肅、四川、湖南、云南等地發現了雞血石。由于現在的昌化朱砂（汞礦）已近尾聲，所以出產的雞血石產量相當有限，市場價格日增不減。
