辛亥革命以后，袁世凱就任“臨時大總統(tǒng)”之職，后又擔(dān)任大總統(tǒng)，袁世凱想借助貨幣改制解決軍費問題，也為提高自己的統(tǒng)治地位進(jìn)而為“制憲”和“稱帝”作準(zhǔn)備，于是發(fā)布《國幣條例》，在全國“統(tǒng)一幣制”發(fā)行銀元貨幣，“袁大頭”銀元正是基于此而誕生的，也是銀元發(fā)展的必然結(jié)果。

“袁大頭”銀元的通行促進(jìn)了銀元的統(tǒng)一，也為“廢兩改元”準(zhǔn)備了條件。因“袁大頭”銀幣幣型劃一，成色、重量有嚴(yán)格規(guī)定，很快受到了社會認(rèn)同和接受，在國內(nèi)金融市場上逐步取代了清朝的龍洋，成為流通領(lǐng)域的主幣。

此枚“中華民國三年袁大頭”，包漿醇厚，鑄造精美，品相完好。錢幣正面為袁世凱的側(cè)面像，在頭像的上方是紀(jì)年“中華民國三年”；背面的圖案是中間漢字“壹元”周圍環(huán)嘉禾紋飾。
