雞血石，中國“四大國石”。同壽山石、青田石、巴林石并列。雞血石與田黃石、青田燈光凍石被譽為印石三寶，主要用作為印章或是工藝雕刻品材料。
雞血石是由“地”和“血”兩部組成。一般認為“血”的礦物成分主要是辰砂。“地“的成分，如昌化雞血石。
雞血石的形成是因朱砂（硫化汞）滲透到高嶺石中，地開石之中緩慢而成，形成時間可與化石同等，這樣兩者交融，共生一體的天然寶石，在國內外是極為罕見的一種。也有的雞血石是含有‘橄欖石’輝石凝結而成。
雞血的成份是硫化汞，石質則為地開石或高嶺石，硬度為2—3度。石中時常帶有水銀斑及少量的石英顆粒突起于石表面。雞血中除主要成份為硫化汞外，還含有少量的致色元素鐵、鈦。
雞血石含有辰砂、(朱砂)、石英、方解石、輝銻礦、地開石、高嶺石、白云石等礦物，且大部分含硫化汞等多種成份的硫化物以及硅酸鹽礦物。產地不同，質地成分也不同，但都離不開硫化汞成分，也有‘氧化鐵’的橄欖石成分。
昌化雞血石可分為凍地、軟地、剛地和硬地四大類。凍地雞血石為玻璃凍、羊脂凍、牛角凍、桃花凍等，微透明或半透明，硬度在2—3級。軟地雞血石的硬度為2—4級，剛地雞血石是高嶺石、明礬石巖經后期硅化的產物，硬度在4—7級。而此件雞血石為（昌化剛地）硬度在4—6級。
