王鐸（1592-1652），河南孟津人，字覺斯，號(hào)嵩樵，別號(hào)煙潭漁叟。他的書法以四十年為界形成兩個(gè)階段。對此，同代的傅山《字訓(xùn)》說：“王鐸四十年前，字極力造作，四十年后，無意合拍，遂成大家”。前四十年，王鐸處于廣泛臨習(xí)前世名帖的階段、他精研六書古文字，鐘鼎款識(shí)、秦漢碑文、歷代法帖。四十歲后，尤其是五十四歲降清之后的他深感“補(bǔ)天乏術(shù)，出世無門”，在極度痛苦中，張揚(yáng)一種“怪”、“狠”、“膽”、“力”的的審美原則，以抒發(fā)內(nèi)心的深層矛盾沖突。這種“怪狠”美學(xué)及其書法用筆狂怪跌宕，筆畫盤旋勾連，結(jié)體險(xiǎn)奇欲墜，章法搖曳沖突，用墨或濃或淡，真可謂變化莫測，驚心動(dòng)魄。其書蘊(yùn)二王典雅秀潤于漢碑顏?zhàn)值膭偨」艠阒?，法度精湛，自然天成。清代張庚《畫征錄》說：“余于睢州蔣郎中泰家見所藏覺斯為袁石愚寫大楷一卷，法兼篆隸，筆筆可喜。明季工書者推董文敏，文敏之半韻瀟灑，一時(shí)固無有及者。若據(jù)此卷之險(xiǎn)勁沉著，有錐沙而泥之妙，文敏當(dāng)遜一籌”。我們從存世墨跡《游中條帖》、《臨豹奴帖》、《萬壑圖卷跋》、《擬山園帖》、《瑯華館帖》中不難獲得認(rèn)同。

In his book, the two kings are elegant and graceful, which is in the vigorous and ancient simplicity of the Yan characters on the Han stele. The law is exquisite and natural. Zhang Geng in the Qing Dynasty said, "I saw Juesi in Jianglang Zhongtai family, Suizhou, writing a volume of large regular script for yuan Shiyu, which is both a seal script and a clerical script.
