咸豐錢是中國古錢中的佼佼者。咸豐僅當皇帝11年，但是其鑄幣的不同版別，豐富多彩，其復雜程度，超過清朝皇帝的總和。“咸豐”是清文宗的年號，咸豐年間正值太平天國運動的時期。此時民怨沸騰，清政府在錢幣鑄行上大做文章，將財政危機轉嫁到老百姓身上。相繼推出“咸豐通寶”、“咸豐重寶”、“咸豐元寶”種類繁多的錢幣。
在清代，從順治、康熙、雍正、乾隆、嘉慶、道光、咸豐到同治、光緒、宣統，每個朝代都鑄有錢幣，但鑄行當百、當千面值大錢的，則只有咸豐一朝，可惜不久即被停止使用。于是，這些當百、當千的大錢就成為收藏家手中的珍品。
該錢幣為咸豐元寶背當二百(計重五兩)直徑4.5cm，重量37.6g。錢幣表面清秀俊朗，其面文四字“咸豐元寶”，背穿上下“當二百”，左右滿文雕刻寶局名，“寶鞏”兩字橫排，邊"計重五兩”。其中，漢文字乃為楷書書體，其書寫極為規矩，文字布局協調，起筆收頓皆力道十足，轉折見鋒，猶如刀斬，筆劃橫直豎立，一絲不茍。觀其鑄相，鑄體厚重，方正圓矩，坦平地章，穿輪干干凈凈，輪邊略見修圓。再觀字廓，深竣挺拔，鼓凸自然有度，恰到好處，毫無做作之態。察其銹相，此幣薄銹濃漿，可感其地章包漿十分凝重，質色青黑，分布自然，深淺相間，漿質緊實而不虛。一眼可識，其乃傳世之品。由于咸豐元寶當前錢幣流傳下來的不多，存世的十分稀少，所以該錢幣是十分珍貴的，具有極高的藝術鑒賞價值和收藏價值。
