辛亥革命勝利后，1912年2月清朝宣統黃帝宣布自行遜位，北洋軍閥袁世凱贊同共和后，根據臨時政府的諾言，孫中山辭去中華民國臨時大總統之職。3月袁世凱在北京就任中華民國臨時大總統。1912年意大利雕刻師喬治受聘于天津造幣廠鐫刻模具，民國二年（公元1913年）十月十日，袁世凱正式就任大總統，著天津造幣廠鑄造發行此幣。版別有光邊、齒邊等。該幣正面鐫袁世凱著軍裝高櫻冠正面像，反面珠圈內鐫嘉禾圖案環，中間豎鐫“壹元”二字；珠圈外上環鐫“中華民國共和紀念幣”九字；下環鐫英文壹元；左右鐫各一方形有內四點外四點花飾。其按制作工藝粗細，可分粗版、細版。此幣設計考究，鑄造精美，五彩銀光，傳世稀少，極為罕見，非常珍貴，具有很大的歷史研究和文物收藏價值。
