咸豐重寶當(dāng)十是以銅為材質(zhì)鑄造于咸豐年間，當(dāng)時(shí)該錢幣為了咸豐重寶，咸豐元寶和咸豐通寶三種之間的區(qū)分，就以當(dāng)五十計(jì)值，高于當(dāng)五十計(jì)值的稱為“咸豐元寶”，低于當(dāng)五十及以下計(jì)值稱為“咸豐重寶”，剩下的就是小平錢咸豐通寶，所有的錢幣鑄造都十分精美，鐫刻在上面的字跡清晰俊秀，銅的材質(zhì)優(yōu)良，錢幣整體簡潔大方，精致，比之前以銅為材質(zhì)的錢幣直徑大些，重量重一些。

咸豐重寶當(dāng)十鑄造的時(shí)期正是太平天國革命運(yùn)動(dòng)的高潮時(shí)期，又加上鴉片戰(zhàn)爭的影響，清政府為了緩解軍事耗費(fèi)的財(cái)力，填補(bǔ)國庫的虧空，更是為了想快速的鎮(zhèn)壓太平天國運(yùn)動(dòng)，試圖在錢幣上面大作文章以此來緩解財(cái)政危機(jī)，所以咸豐重寶當(dāng)十是在迫不得已的情況下開鑄的，再后來又迅速的鑄造了當(dāng)五十、當(dāng)百和當(dāng)百以上，并命令全國開始鑄造，在原來的鑄造局上又加開了好多鑄造局，以至于咸豐重寶當(dāng)十種類繁多，并不統(tǒng)一，各具特色，大多是劣質(zhì)的，粗制濫造的多，很多鑄造局在原材料不足的情況下以鐵錢、鉛錢代替銅錢鑄造，這樣相對(duì)來說咸豐重寶當(dāng)十的精品非常之少，在后期鴉片戰(zhàn)爭和太平天國運(yùn)動(dòng)一起爆發(fā)，很多鑄造局就停止鑄造了。
