清光緒二十八年(1902)，川督岑春煊始議鑄造銅元。光緒二十九年(1903)六月，建立四川銅元局，其規(guī)模不大，僅就原購鑄小制錢的廢機(jī)修整使用。廠房是機(jī)器局的壓銅廠和舊的銅錢廠，鑄料是機(jī)器局的槍彈廢殼邊渣和寶川局余銅，圯煉凈盡。按銅95％、鉛4％、錫1％的比例配鑄“當(dāng)十”銅元，所鑄銅元悉用紫銅,質(zhì)量較好。
