四川銅幣在清末初鑄時，質量較好，一般都是用紫銅。每枚銅元的含銅量均在96%--97%左右，除老一百、老二百兩種為紫銅外，其余均是白黃色的白鉛，故銅質不如清末所鑄之純.

1912年4月廢止大清銅幣模板，改鑄“漢”字銅元，有當10文、20文、50文三種面額。1913年，增鑄當100文、200文的銅幣。因銅幣反面中央大圓圈內為一篆書“漢”字，“漢”字底有數十條橫直紋，因而也稱之為“漢”字銅元。
