《富春山居圖》畫的是浙江富春山兩岸初秋景色，筆墨蒼簡清潤，體現了黃公望爐火純青的藝術境界，其作山水畫所倡導的去邪、甜、俗、賴的高標畫風在此畫中做出了完美詮釋。

開卷描繪坡岸水色，遠山隱約，接著是連綿起伏，群峰爭奇的山巒，再下是茫茫江水，天水一色，最后則高峰突起，遠岫渺茫。山間叢林茂密，點綴村舍、茅亭，水中則有漁舟垂釣。山和水的布置疏密得當，層次分明，大片的空白，乃是長卷畫的構成特色。筆墨上已顯然取法董源、巨然，但更為簡約利落。

山石的勾、皴，用筆頓挫轉折，隨意而似天成。將近20厘米的長披麻皴，枯濕渾成，功力深厚，灑脫而極富靈氣，洋溢著平淡天真的神韻。全圖用墨淡雅，僅在山石上普染一層極淡墨色，并用稍深墨色染出遠山及江邊沙漬、波影，只有點苔、點葉時用上濃墨，但已足以醒目。

這是一幅濃縮了畫家畢生追求，足以標程百代之作，可謂水曠、山遠、林幽、石秀的全息式山水長卷，足可媲美張擇端風物畫《清明上河圖》的全景線軸。無怪乎董其昌見了驚呼：“吾師乎！吾師乎！一丘五岳，都具是矣！”
 

The painting of Fuchun Mountain Residence shows the early autumn scenery on both sides of Fuchun mountain in Zhejiang Province. The ink is simple and clear, which embodies the artistic realm of Huang Gongwang. The high standard painting style of eliminating evil, sweetness, vulgarity and reliance advocated by his landscape painting makes a perfect interpretation in this painting.

The open volume depicts the water color on the Bank of the slope. The distant mountains are indistinct, followed by the continuous ups and downs, the mountains where the peaks compete for wonder, and then the vast river and water. The sky and water are the same, and finally the peaks rise, and the distant hills are indistinct. There are dense forests in the mountains, dotted with cottages and thatched pavilions, and fishing boats in the water. The arrangement of mountains and waters is appropriate, with clear layers and large gaps, which are the characteristics of long scroll painting. It is obvious that Dong Yuan and Juran have been adopted in writing, but they are more simple and neat.

The hook and Cun of the mountain stone are turned suddenly with the pen, which seems to be made by nature at will. Nearly 20cm long cape is chapped, dry and wet, with profound skill, free and easy and very smart, full of plain and innocent verve. The whole picture is light and elegant in ink. Only a layer of very light ink is commonly dyed on the rocks, and sand stains and wave shadows of distant mountains and riversides are dyed with a little dark ink. Only when the moss and leaves are spotted, thick ink is used, but it is enough to be eye-catching.

This is a full-length holographic landscape scroll that has concentrated the painter's lifelong pursuit and can be regarded as a masterpiece of hundreds of generations. It can be described as a long scroll with open water, remote mountains, secluded forests and beautiful stones. It can be compared with the panoramic line axis of Zhang Zeduan's scenery painting Qingming Riverside. No wonder Dong Qichang saw it and exclaimed, "my teacher! My teacher! One hill and five mountains, all of them have their own characteristics! "
