中國銅器鑄造技術蓬勃發展，鑄銅業興盛，銅材取代其他材料，成為香爐鑄造的主要材料，并迅速普及。隨著養生熏香活動的興起，香文化也日益得到人們的關注，焚香用具早在東周時期就已經出現，漢唐隨著需求的增加，出現了由各種材料制作的香具明代宣德皇帝在位時，為滿足玩賞香爐的嗜好，責成宮廷御匠參照皇府內藏的定、汝、官、哥、均等名窯瓷器的款式，以及《宣和博古圖錄》、《考古圖》等史籍，設計和監制香爐，鑄造了聞名于世的宣德爐，開了后世銅爐的先河。選用當時暹羅國（今泰國）的風磨銅，又配以金、銀、鉛、水銀等金屬，反復進行冶煉，工序復雜。明代項元汴在《宣爐博論》中說“宣廟隨敕工匠，煉畢十二，每斤得其精者才四兩耳。”就這樣，吳邦佐受命最終煉就顏色、款識多樣的成爐數千只，這就是名揚數百年，為后世所津津樂道的“宣德爐”。

At that time, in order to satisfy the hobby of enjoying the incense burner, the imperial court master was instructed to design according to the styles of the famous kiln porcelains of Ding, Ru, Guan, Brother, and other equal kiln in the imperial palace, as well as historical books such as "Xuanhe Bogu Catalog" and "Archaeological Map" He supervised the production of incense burners, cast the world-famous Xuande stove, and opened the precedent of later generations of copper stoves. Wind-milled copper from Siam (now Thailand) was used at the time, and metals such as gold, silver, lead, and mercury were used for repeated smelting, and the process was complicated. Xiang Yuanzhang of the Ming Dynasty said in "Xuanluo Bolun" that "Xuan Temple followed the craftsmen and made twelve, and only four or two ears were gained per kilogram." In this way, Wu Bangzuo was instructed to finally develop a variety of colors and styles. There are thousands of furnaces, which is the "Xuande furnace" that has been famous for hundreds of years.
宣德爐造型優美、質地精良，名揚海內。冒辟疆的《宣爐歌》贊其皮色：“如女子肌膚，柔軟細膩可捏”。該爐在宣德當朝就有人仿制，持續到民國乃至今天仍不斷。山河變遷數百年，真正在宣德三年鑄造的銅香爐已極為罕見。由于歷代仿品流存諸多，以至于后來“宣德爐”已不僅是指宣德三年制造的爐，而成為帶宣德款銅爐的統稱。其中有些品質精良者，也是不可多得的古董珍玩。
