他一生勤奮，自幼又受到良好教育，文采儒雅，工詩文、善書畫，山水、花鳥、人物無一不工。早年曾向沈周學畫，后師法董源、巨然以及元趙孟頫、王蒙、吳鎮諸家，博采眾長，自成一格。
