鼎本來是古代的烹飪之器,相當于現在的鍋,用以燉煮和盛放魚肉。許慎在《說文解字》里說:“鼎,三足兩耳,和五味之寶器也。”有三足圓鼎,也有四足方鼎。最早的鼎是黏土燒制的陶鼎,后來又有了用青銅鑄的銅鼎。東周尤其是春秋戰國以后,在周王室衰微、禮樂制度崩潰、政治多元化格局的背景下,代表王權的青銅禮器從全盛的頂峰逐漸衰落下來。各國開始制作新的器型及紋飾,表現出自由性、多樣性、地方性的藝術風格。尤其是裝飾紋飾的變化象征意味更加深遠,體現了春秋、戰國時期的審美取向。
