明毅宗朱由檢崇禎元年（1628-1644年）始鑄。《續(xù)文獻通考》載∶天啟七年12月，戶工二部進崇禎新錢式，帝令每錢一文重一錢三分，務(wù)令寶色精彩，不必刊戶工字樣。錢文真書，通寶之‘通’字有單點、雙點之分。有小平、當二、當五，又有當十型大錢四種。小平錢徑一般2.2~2.6厘米（實測最大徑2.6厘米），重約3~6克；當二錢徑一般2.7厘米，重3.7克；當五錢徑3.3厘米，重6.2克，南都錢較輕。
