辛亥革命之后民國成立，全國處于百廢待興的狀態(tài)，為了能夠令經(jīng)濟發(fā)展得以恢復(fù)和解決軍費以及提高個人政治地位，袁世凱即位后，令政府發(fā)行了銀元貨幣，對當(dāng)時經(jīng)濟的恢復(fù)起了很大的作用。因銀元鑄有他的側(cè)身圖像，故此又稱“袁大頭”。
