光緒元寶是晚清發現的流通機制幣，也是我國首批大量發行的貴金屬流通機制幣，結束了我國幾千年的傳統造幣史。清末銅價劇漲，民間毀錢為銅，以獲數倍之利，市面出現錢荒。廣東因停鑄制錢，市面制錢日乏，小額流通十分不便。與此同時，西歐各國列強挾其工業革命成功，技術上的優勢，大舉入侵中國，屆時我國沿海各省民間流通的銀幣，大部分都是外國銀元。光緒26 年6 月，兩廣總督德壽與前總督李鴻章奏準廣東仿香港銅仙鑄造機制銅元。故清代機制銅元的鑄造由廣東伊始。繼而江蘇、福建、四川等省相繼鑄造銅元。

In June 26th, Guangxu, the governor of Guangdong and Guangdong, Deshou, and Li Hongzhang, the former governor of Guangdong and Guangdong, set out to cast the mechanical copper dollar imitating Hong Kong copper immortal. 此枚錢幣正面珠圈內鐫“光緒元寶”四字直讀，中心飾一六瓣空心梅花進行點綴，真有錦上添花之功，外圈頂端鑲嵌“江蘇省造”四個小字，底端鐫幣值“每元當制錢十文”，左右為滿文，整個幣面造型之美無與倫比，巧奪天工。錢幣的背面中心為蟠龍圖案，一條栩栩如生的龍張牙舞爪，周圍有祥云圍繞，似乎在向世人彰顯大清王朝的神圣和威嚴。龍紋打造深峻清晰，包漿自然，鑄造技藝精湛。此幣銅質精良，形制規整，錢面字跡磅礴大氣，背面紋路清晰，版面設計優雅，鑄造工藝神乎其技，遠觀之似一幅油畫，極其瑰麗。幣面經過無情歲月的洗禮及紛亂的戰爭年代而產生了斑駁銹跡，隨著時間的變遷而留下了歷史的烙印。
