海南黃花梨氣干密度為0.82-1.1/cm3，僅有少數重的料或成品入水即沉，多數都會有點浮出水面，所以，不沉水就不是好料這樣理解也是錯誤的。黃花梨又分為東部的黃梨(顏色發黃)和西部的油梨（紅、紫、黑三種顏色都有）。東部的黃梨相對西部的油梨來說材質要輕，作為古時進貢皇家的木料，最為出名的形容就是熒光感強，半透明質感透露出屢屢金絲。產于海南島西部的料子都叫油梨，所以也一般稱為海南黃花梨西部料子。但是西部產的料子不一定都是油梨，只有油性密度達到一定的級別才能算作油梨的。其實這些說法并不是很科學。清·《崖州志》中有過對海南黃花梨的區分的：“花梨、紫紅色，…...。氣最辛香，有油格、糠格兩種。油格者，不可多得。”這里描述的油格就是我們常說的油梨，其實應該叫做油黎，油黎一般是產在海南島的昌化江流域，籠統地說西部也不科學，這一帶產的海南黃花梨含油量高，含油1.5%--3.8%比重大多重于水，也就是能沉水，質地好，稍加打磨拋光就晶瑩透亮，熒光特強，呈半透明琥珀狀！海南黃花梨油梨的木性最為穩定，很少發生變形扭曲的現象，顏色很深，即使是新料，也跟糠梨的老料差不多，一般為紅褐色和褐灰色，這種料子在海南存世量極少，價格也是最貴的，屬于海南黃花梨中的搜索上品！
