鬼谷子下山的故事出自《戰國策》。故事說的是戰國時期，燕國和齊國交戰，為齊國效命的孫臏為敵方所擒，他的師傅鬼谷子前往營救，率領眾人一行下山。這件元青花人物罐“鬼谷子下山”描繪的便是鬼谷子下山的情景，鬼谷子坐在由獅虎共拉的兩輪車上。后面跟著兩個騎馬的人，其中一個穿著武官衣服打了一面旗寫有“鬼谷”兩字。整個青花紋飾共分四層，第一層頸部：飾水波紋；第二層肩部：飾纏枝牡丹；第三層腹部：為“鬼谷子下山”主題紋飾；第四層下部：為變形蓮瓣紋內繪琛寶，俗稱“八大碼”。

此件元青花珍品----“鬼谷子下山”青花大罐是敝人十多年前偶遇所得，該器形制作規整，釉色瑩潤，胎體厚重較適中。整器平口，短頸，豐肩，鼓圓腹，腹至脛部逐漸內收至底微外撇；素底胎骨顯麻倉土質，圈足斜削較淺，有明顯旋紋。通體共有四組紋飾組成，主體紋飾為歷史人物故事“鬼谷子下山”的情景為主，另外三組為輔助紋飾。

該罐的 主體紋飾衍生于中國戰國時期樂毅圖齊的故事，圖案中主要人物鬼谷子是軍事家孫子的師傅，他被請下山，以解燕國被強兵所圍之困。鬼谷子先生乘坐一輛由一虎一豹拉的兩輪車，跟隨兩個步卒。齊國使節蘇代騎馬殿后，兩個人之間有一少年，英氣勃發，縱馬而行。此罐人物刻畫流暢自然、神韻十足、栩栩如生，各種輔助紋飾也是筆筆精到，十分完美，顯然是出自具有深厚繪畫功力的大畫家之手，以張力十足、無以倫比的濃艷深透的青花紋飾，強烈地感染著愛好欣賞元青花的每一位藏家。
