在清代，從順治、康熙、雍正、乾隆、嘉慶、道光、咸豐到同治、光緒、宣統，每個朝代都鑄有錢幣，但鑄行當百、當千面值大錢的，則只有咸豐一朝，流通時間很是短，十分少見。咸豐錢可分為重寶、元寶、通寶三種,當五十及以下計值稱為“咸豐重寶”，高于當五十計值稱為“咸豐元寶”，以區別于小平錢“咸豐通寶”。咸豐重寶有“當五”、“一十”、“二十”、“五十”和“一百”等版別。由于咸豐錢刊行量少，相對來說較量少見。

據相關史料記載，清代咸豐年間(1851-1861年)，當時正值太平天國農民起義運動，這一運動發展迅速，天平天國政府迅速在江蘇南京建都，所以當時清政府賴以鑄錢的滇銅就因為道路的阻斷而無法運進北京。鎮壓起義急需大量的軍餉開銷，但是由于道路阻斷，鑄錢的原材料卻是十分緊缺，這給清政府造成了嚴重的財政困難，最終迫使清政府自咸豐三年開始發行紙幣和改鑄大錢來彌補財政虧空。咸豐元寶當百錢幣就是在這樣的大背景下產生的。
