咸豐重寶的鑄造材料主要是黃銅，也曾出現過鐵錢等其它材質的錢幣。另外還有一種用金、銀、玳瑁、白銅等材料精制的宮廷錢幣，形制較大，錢體也較厚，當屬皇家喜慶用錢，這種錢幣鑄量非常少，質量極佳，價格遠非黃銅、鐵制錢能夠所比。官版材質為以銅75%、鋅20%、錫3%以及其他配合，母錢含銅純度更高。
