“咸豐重寶”始鑄當(dāng)十大錢，繼而又開鑄當(dāng)五十、當(dāng)百和當(dāng)百以上，并令全國各省迅速鑄造推行。“咸豐重寶”鑄行情況特殊，當(dāng)值等次、大小輕重、鑄造材質(zhì)、鑄造工藝、文字書體、錢文等，在各局甚至在同一局監(jiān)內(nèi)鑄造時，都差異很大，以至有當(dāng)值大小和錢體大小輕重倒置的，此外還有鐵錢和鉛錢。此幣十分精美，字跡清晰深俊，銅材優(yōu)良，呈金黃色，錢文精美，沒一絲一毫拖泥帶水，比同版流通的錢稍大些、厚重些，圓形方口錢，黃銅質(zhì)，精純細膩，雖黃亮如新，但亦予人以熟舊之感。宋體錢文，字口深峻，凝煉緊湊，筆鋒銳利，手工雕刻痕跡明顯。保存完好，鑄造精美，錢體厚重，幣面包漿渾厚，錢幣十分精美，文字端正，流暢，舒展，在日光的照射下更散發(fā)出熠熠光輝。

清文宗咸豐年間（1851-1861年）所鑄平錢。因政治腐敗，經(jīng)濟危困，鑄行未久即收到各種重寶、元寶大錢沖擊，通寶錢遂嚴重貶值，故制作簡陋，形制混雜；全國27局所鑄的小平錢，銅質(zhì)、大小及文字各不相同，粗略者多而精良者罕見。其中大樣錢鮮見，而更多為私鑄劣質(zhì)薄小錢，期間鵝眼錢重不足1g。背文滿文各寶局名，常見者大約20局左右，尤以“寶臺”局“阿克蘇”局“寶通”局所鑄為稀少。傳世尚有“咸豐通寶”雕母數(shù)種，極為珍貴。咸豐錢的品類很繁雜，僅中國歷史博物館珍藏達917種。當(dāng)時的鑄局有：泉、源、直、薊、福、陜、昌、河、德、晉、云、東、武、桂、浙、濟、臺、蘇、鞏、川、黔、南、廣、伊犁、迪化、葉爾羌、庫車、阿克蘇等。傳世以雕母、大樣、小平錢、寶福局計值、計重錢少見，新疆寶迪局“當(dāng)八十”為珍。
