慈禧太后（1835—1908），即葉赫那拉氏，又叫西太后、老佛爺，清朝咸豐帝妃子，同治、光緒兩朝（1861—1908）實際的最高統治者，以垂簾聽政、訓政等方式統治中國長達47年。所在時期我國遭遇外患頻繁，且每有戰事十有八九要輸，遂“量中華之物力，結與國之歡心”，割地賠款。加上生活奢華無度、反對維新變法，百年來為國人所詬病。

據遼寧《時代商報》報道，2004年7月4日在沈陽故宮首次展出的慈禧太后真跡《富貴長春圖》一經亮相，立刻“鎮住”了前來參觀的游客，大家一致為這位“辣手”太后的書畫作品叫絕。據沈陽故宮博物院院長支運亭介紹：“大家都知道西太后慈禧是清末一個政治家，卻鮮有人知道她還是一個出色的書畫作家，我曾經看過她批閱的一些奏折，字跡很漂亮。”

《清宮遺聞》記載有“光緒中葉以后，慈禧忽怡情翰墨，學繪花卉，又學作擘窠大字”。慈禧太后丈夫、兒子都死得很早，長年孑然一身，她雖地位至上、頤指氣使，王公大臣拜倒一地“萬歲”聲滿殿轟響，卻仍然幾十年生活孤獨、精神困厄。她活得并不容易，于是“喜藝事”，勤習書畫，以求得內心的安慰。
