我國在光緒元寶正式量產之前，充斥在我國市場的是外國洋銀。尤其是沿海地區和西方接觸較早，自17世紀初荷蘭與西班牙商人先后侵入臺灣后，西方銀圓就慢慢滲入到國人的生活，也正是因為如此，所以臺灣清代文獻中常見“番銀”及“鷹銀”等。

中法戰爭期間（1883年12月——1885年4月），臺灣也是戰區，軍火需要大陸供應，需要巨大的經濟支持。因此，巡撫劉銘傳在臺北府城北門外設置機器局，于光緒十二年（1886年）完工。但這些臨危受命的臺灣省造銀圓具體的生產時間不詳，目前尚未見原始記載。僅知臺灣省造銀圓按銘文可分為“臺省制造”及“臺灣制造”兩大版式，幣面都沒有滿文。

后來甲午中日戰爭中國戰敗，清政府于1895年4月（光緒二十一年三月）與日本簽訂《馬關條約》，臺灣被迫割讓給日本，因此臺灣省造銀圓也隨之被迫停產了。據資料記載，日本占據臺灣后，臺灣銀行于1900年12月到1901月6月間，在臺南地區調查通貨種類，其《視察復命書》稱臺灣所鑄銀圓稀少罕見。能留存至今者更是少之更少。
