范曾，字十翼，江蘇南通人，中國近現代著名學者、書畫家、詩人，1938年生于書香之家，自幼即學習歷史、文學和繪畫，1959年考入天津南開大學歷史系。兩年后轉入中央美院研究美術史，后又轉入中國畫系學習。他先后師從吳作人、李可染、蔣兆和、李苦禪、劉凌滄諸位名家，深得教益。曾在中央工藝美術學院任教，后又籌建南開大學東方藝術系，任系主任。1979年他首訪日本，被日本譽為“近代中國十大畫家之一”。1982年獲日中文化交流功勞紀念杯。近幾年范曾的繪畫市場人氣指數驟漲，價格不斷攀升，這是不爭的客觀事實。書畫得到社會的認可，知名度和美譽度也大幅度提升。從1984年，日本岡山范曾美術館建立；1986年，捐建并主持南開大學東方藝術系；2008年，南通大學范曾藝術館揭牌；2011年，榮獲中華藝文獎終身成就獎。有二十四字自評：癡于繪畫，能書；偶為辭章，頗抒己懷；好讀書史，略通古今之變。范曾的筆墨深處似乎都有著一縷詩魂的回蕩，而這與他自幼生長于詩人之世家、一直接受著詩歌環境之熏陶培養，自然有著密切的關系。若就今日一般之畫家言之，則欲求一有不羈之才如范曾者固已極為難遇，若欲更求一有文學詩歌之修養如范曾者，則更屬難能。范曾先生不僅工書善畫，而且能詩，其所自作之詩篇亦復才氣縱橫迥出俗塵之外，世稱“三絕”，范曾先生自可當之而無愧。
