上世紀(jì)20年代大革命失敗以后,1927年10月毛澤東發(fā)動(dòng)秋收起義，建立了革命根據(jù)地井岡山，開辟了農(nóng)村包圍城市的革命道路。歷經(jīng)50年，上世紀(jì)80年代文化大革命以后，1978年12月中國(guó)共產(chǎn)黨第十一屆三中全會(huì)確立了“改革開放、以經(jīng)濟(jì)建設(shè)為中心的發(fā)展思路，社會(huì)主義建設(shè)進(jìn)入了新的歷史時(shí)期。

第四套人民幣產(chǎn)生于“全面改革開放，團(tuán)結(jié)各民族快速發(fā)展國(guó)民經(jīng)濟(jì)”的時(shí)期。這一階段，國(guó)民經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展水平迅速提高，商品經(jīng)濟(jì)空前發(fā)展，貨幣需求量大大增加，貨幣票面的面額券別結(jié)構(gòu)已經(jīng)不適應(yīng)新的經(jīng)濟(jì)形勢(shì)發(fā)展。于是在1987年4月27日，央行發(fā)行了第四套人民幣，主幣有1元、2元、5元、10元、50元和100元六種，輔幣有1角、2角和5角三種，主輔幣共九種。與第三套人民幣相比，增加了50、100元大面額人民幣，滿足了當(dāng)時(shí)社會(huì)經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展的需要，徹底解放了生產(chǎn)力，促進(jìn)了各民族團(tuán)結(jié)，有利于全面改革開放，快速發(fā)展國(guó)民經(jīng)濟(jì)。

為適應(yīng)反假人民幣工作需要，1992年8月20日，又發(fā)行了改版后的1990年版50、100元券，增加了安全線。
