古籍善本是指經過嚴格校勘、無訛文脫字的古代書籍。時代下限，一般確定在乾隆六十年。
善本，簡單講就是好的書本。善本最初的概念是指經過嚴格?？?、無訛文脫字的書本。印刷術產生前，書籍大都是寫本。把原稿或別本認真繕寫下來，經過與原文校核無誤，就成為善本。唐以后，雕版印刷術出現，書籍開始出現“版本”的概念。不同版本書籍收錄文獻多寡、校勘精劣程度各不相同，就有了足本和殘本、精本和劣本的差別；書籍版本出現早晚、珍稀程度不同，就有了古本和今本、孤本和復本的差別。中國有6000年的文明史，圖書作為重要的標志文明的牌記，與中國古老的文明社會并駕齊驅發展著。從壁石、鐘鼎、竹簡、尺牘、縑帛到紙張，無一不向社會傳播文明，傳遞知識。但久經改朝換代、天災人禍，能保留下的古書少之又少。所以，古書收藏愛好者認清古籍中孤本、善本、珍本的界定是非常有必要的。孤本的概念比較清晰。凡國內藏書只此一部的，未見各家收藏、著錄的，一概稱為國內孤本。
珍本與善本的界定，歷來為版本鑒定學者所爭論。宋效先老師曾在1987年發表論文指出：“珍本是比較稀見或比較珍貴之本，善本是凡內容有用，流傳稀少，校刻精良，具有文物、學術或藝術價值之本。”而在李致忠老師的觀點中認為：在西方人的觀念里和詞匯中，“善本”就是珍貴的、值錢的、罕見的傳本，這實際上是以“珍本”概念替代了“善本”的含義。時代久遠，傳世孤罕的書籍，自然珍貴。甚至雖有明顯的文字訛脫，反被視為珍貴版本，這在古今中外都有實例可舉。本來“珍”并不等于“善”，罕見的東西并不一定真好，可是誰也不會把珍貴的東西視若糞土。這就在實際上把“珍”、“善”合流了。
目前市場上出售古籍書，較為盛行，但唐、宋、元、明等朝代的古籍書已是鳳毛麟角，難以見到，故大多數均為清代或者民國時期的書籍。
