寬永通寶它始鑄于日本第108代后水尾天皇寬永三年（1626年），也是最早開始仿鑄中國方孔圓錢的國家。寬永通寶以鑄造年代分新老兩中寬永，老寬永，也就是二水寬永比較值錢，在日本售價可以高達幾百萬日元。據史料記載，寬永二年（1625年）乙丑，水戶田町之富商佐藤新助，向日本政府請鑄寬永新錢，其中寬永通寶背“文”、“元”字比較稀少，從幣材上分，有金、銀、銅、鐵、鉛，銅錢又分紅銅、黃銅、青銅，而以紅銅最常見。由于制作精良，為當時我國民間所樂用，成為流入我國混用的方孔圓錢之冠。
