嘉慶是清朝第七位皇帝（入關后第五位）清仁宗愛新覺羅·颙琰的年號，時間為公元1796年至1820年（其中嘉慶二十五年清宣宗即位沿用 ）。嘉慶通寶鑄于清仁宗嘉慶年間(1796-1820年)。錢徑2．2-2．6厘米，重2-4克。錢面文字"嘉慶通寶"以楷書書寫，從上而下而右而左直讀。錢背滿文左"寶"，右為滿文鑄造錢局名，如泉、源、蘇、河、廣等。少數錢背星月紋以及記地或祥瑞漢字(如:桂、福、壽、康、寧)，吉語背文如:“天子萬年”、“國泰民安”、“天下太平”、“日日生財”、“嘉慶萬歲”、“唯和”、“如賣三倍”、“四方來賀”、“五世同堂”等多達20種，為歷代古泉所僅見。
