銅元，是中國清末民初以來所鑄各種新式銅幣的通稱，民間俗稱銅板。其是我國近代貨幣體系中的重要組成部分。我國銅元最初誕生于清朝光緒二十六年(1900年)，它與之前的方孔銅錢大有不同，中間無孔，是仿照香港銅輔幣鑄造而成的。也正是它的誕生，標志著我國金屬貨幣鑄造工藝從傳統的手工翻砂鑄造進入了先進的機器化生產的新階段。
清朝是我國最后一個封建王朝，也是我國歷史上一個重要的轉折點。在清代，銀幣、紙鈔、銅錢并行，而之后的洋務運動影響到了鑄幣業，兩廣總督張之洞于光緒十三年（1887年）委托使英大臣在英國訂購全套造幣機器，在廣東錢局首鑄機制銀元和銅元。這款錢幣就是我們現在熟悉的“光緒元寶”。
如文中展示，幣面中央為漢字“光緒元寶”正楷，上環為滿文翻譯。左右兩側鐫有“戶部”二字，下環為幣值“當制錢二十文”。錢幣背面中央鑄蟠龍圖，龍圖刻畫精致，自上至左向右環繞一周，形似騰躍之勢，威勢無兩。上緣鐫有英文“HUPOO”，下緣則是英文紀值“20CASH”。
而展示的此枚戶部造光緒元寶，還是一枚錯版幣。錯版幣就是指錢幣在鑄壓時因為模具偏差，造成圖文偏移的錢幣。這種錢幣的產生是小概率事件，使得其存世量極其稀少。因為在當時的錢局是有專人負責錢幣檢驗的，錯印的錢幣基本不可能流通到市面，一經發現即刻會銷毀重鑄。在現今的收藏市場上，錯版錢幣一般會比普通錢幣的價格高出幾倍以上。
