辛亥革命之后民國成立，全國處于百廢待興的狀態，為了能夠令經濟發展得以恢復和解決軍費以及提高個人政治地位，袁世凱即位后，令政府發行了銀元貨幣，對當時經濟的恢復起了很大的作用。因銀元鑄有他的側身圖像，故此又稱“袁大頭”。
