古生物化石
古生物化石,地質(zhì)學(xué)專業(yè)術(shù)語,指是人類史前地質(zhì)歷史時期形成并賦存于地層中的生物遺體和活動遺跡,包括植物、無脊椎動物、脊椎動物等化石及其遺跡化石。它是地球歷史的鑒證,是研究生物起源和進化等的科學(xué)依據(jù)。古生物化石不同于文物,它是重要的地質(zhì)遺跡,是我國寶貴的、不可再生的自然遺產(chǎn)。

化石就是生活在遙遠(yuǎn)的過去的生物的遺體或遺跡變成的石頭。在漫長的地質(zhì)年代里,地球上曾經(jīng)生活過無數(shù)的生物,這些生物死亡之后的遺體或是生活時遺留下來的痕跡,許多都被當(dāng)時的泥沙掩埋起來。在隨后的歲月中,這些生物遺體中的有機質(zhì)分解殆盡,堅硬的部分如外殼、骨骼、枝葉等與包圍在周圍的沉積物一起經(jīng)過石化變成了石頭,但是它們原來的形態(tài)、結(jié)構(gòu)(甚至一些細(xì)微的內(nèi)部構(gòu)造)依然保留著;同樣,那些生物生活時留下的痕跡也可以這樣保留下來。我們把這些石化了的生物遺體、遺跡就稱為化石。從化石中可以看到古代動物、植物的樣子,從而可以推斷出古代動物、植物的生活情況和生活環(huán)境,可以推斷出埋藏化石的地層形成的年代和經(jīng)歷的變化。
