天珠又稱“天眼珠”，主要產(chǎn)地在西藏、藏東、不丹、錫金、拉達(dá)克等喜馬拉雅山域，是一種稀有寶石。天珠的藏語(yǔ)發(fā)音為“思怡”,為美好、威德、財(cái)富之意，而梵文是以“昧自尬”稱呼天珠。相傳天珠原屬于“天神”的寶物，因?yàn)槌霈F(xiàn)了缺陷，被貶降到人間，后被藏族發(fā)現(xiàn)，所以西藏人至今仍認(rèn)為天珠是“天降之石”，而藏民族認(rèn)為能夠擁有一顆天珠，必須要有很大的福氣和緣分，一旦擁有了它，即是無(wú)限福慧的開(kāi)始。因此，天珠受到了各界人士的青睞。

關(guān)于天珠是珍貴藥材，可以治療疾病的記載，始見(jiàn)藏醫(yī)經(jīng)典《四部醫(yī)典》。據(jù)介紹，這部醫(yī)典中記載的很多珍寶類藥品里就會(huì)有“九眼石”成分(九眼石即天珠)。天珠作為礦物玉石類入藥，在中醫(yī)典籍中早有記載，明代李時(shí)珍的《本草綱目·金石部》就有此類記述。在藏藥《晶珠本草》明確指出天珠與人造天珠的區(qū)別：“瑟治，鎮(zhèn)痛。瑟新品很少，容易辨認(rèn)。虎伏塊狀，有黑色花紋、黃色花紋、褐色花紋相雜，紋長(zhǎng)，斑小。人工造的花紋扭曲，注意不要相混。真品虎伏塊狀，紋長(zhǎng)九倍。用來(lái)擦眼，利眼病。用涼水泡一夜，水可止血痛;內(nèi)服治病入血分;也可入內(nèi)服藥。涂在箭頭上，鎮(zhèn)邪。帶在身上可預(yù)防”。
