開元通寶是唐代第一種貨幣，也是發行量最大，沿用時間最長的貨幣。由于其質量合理，通貨控制得當，錢幣做工比較精美，故深受百姓喜愛。最初的“開元通寶”由書法家歐陽詢題寫，面文“開元通寶”，形制仍沿用秦方孔圓錢，規定每十文重一兩，每一文的重量稱為一錢，而一千文則重六斤四兩。
