我國(guó)古代錢幣，品種繁多，除大量的流通幣外，還有一種非流通幣，俗稱“花錢”。花錢主要用來玩賞、裝飾、祈福和饋贈(zèng)等，它以其講究的用料、高超的工藝、精湛的藝術(shù)性以及獨(dú)特的文物價(jià)值和文化價(jià)值而成為中國(guó)古代錢幣的一個(gè)類別。花錢有官鑄，也有私鑄。大者如盆盤，小者似雞目，有金、銀、銅、鐵、錫、鋁以及其它各種質(zhì)料，精粗不一，形狀多樣。有的有圖案有文字，有的只有圖案沒有文字，也有的只有文字而無花紋。

我國(guó)歷代花錢，其文字和圖案內(nèi)容豐富多彩，各具姿容，稱它為古代“銅版畫”并不過分，是一個(gè)十分珍貴的文物寶庫(kù)。書譜記載達(dá)2000多種，主要分為以下幾類：一、吉語(yǔ)錢：與祝賀、祝福、頌揚(yáng)的禮節(jié)相關(guān);二、咒語(yǔ)錢：這類花錢與民間占卜、社會(huì)習(xí)俗相關(guān)。如“驅(qū)邪降福”等;三、錢文錢：正面是錢文，背面是花紋、圖案，有動(dòng)物、云彩、荷花、龍鳳、人物圖等;四、生肖錢：正面或背面有十二生肖動(dòng)物豬、牛、雞等;五、馬錢：是馬的圖案和文字，有跑馬、飛馬、八駿圖等;六、秘戲錢：是男女合歡圖案的花錢。除上述六大類外，還有賜賞錢、鎮(zhèn)庫(kù)錢、開爐錢、雕母錢、洗兒錢、上梁錢、撒賬錢等。各種花錢的錢文，可以說是古代書法、文字的大匯集，草、篆、隸各種書體齊備，很多書法是出自蘇軾、王庭堅(jiān)等名家的手筆。一枚“百壽百福”錢，就有“壽”字和“福”字?jǐn)?shù)十種不同書體的寫法。另外，如“清白傳家”的蝌蚪文，“泉貨元神”的九疊篆文等，千奇百怪，舉不勝舉。
