石雕歷史悠久，文化內(nèi)涵豐富，在國(guó)石候選中，位列四大名石之首，從清朝到現(xiàn)代，上至帝王將相，下至文人騷客，都對(duì)壽山石雕情有獨(dú)鐘，且留下了寶貴的歷史資料，因此壽山石雕具有廣泛的群眾基礎(chǔ)。清·朱彝尊《壽山石歌》中寫(xiě)道:“今來(lái)商賈索尚叁倍，未免瑕漬同梅黑成”。此組印章，均是石質(zhì)凝結(jié)潤(rùn)澤，通體明透，似凝固的蜂蜜，富有光澤。本品橫寬豎狹，略帶圓轉(zhuǎn)，以刀為筆，虛實(shí)結(jié)合，作者依形就勢(shì)，以薄意的手法進(jìn)行裝飾，沖刀淺刻，行云流水，各種紋式，刻畫(huà)十分精妙，沁人心脾，素潔無(wú)飾，格調(diào)淡雅。四方小印章其畫(huà)面風(fēng)格高古，意境空靈，古韻盎然，更是十分具有鑒賞審美價(jià)值。作者巧思精工，薄意雕刻畫(huà)面清雅雋秀。其線條流暢，極富筆情墨趣，是可賞可玩的案頭佳品，乃不可多得之珍寶，收藏價(jià)值極高。

由于壽山石“溫潤(rùn)光澤，易于奏刀”的特性，很早就被用于作雕刻的材料。1965年，福州市考古工作者在市區(qū)北郊五鳳山的一座南朝墓中出土兩只壽山石豬俑，這說(shuō)明，壽山石至少在1500多年前的南朝，便已被作為雕刻的材料。。明清時(shí)期，尤其是清代的幾任皇帝都對(duì)壽山石鐘愛(ài)有加，壽山石因此成為宮廷御用品，以壽山石作為篆刻材料的風(fēng)氣尤為盛行。據(jù)史料記載，雍正時(shí)壽山石已納入官府征稅范圍，壽山石雕刻因材施藝，印章的鈕飾更加精致多樣，出現(xiàn)了印章、文房用具、人物、動(dòng)物及金玉鑲嵌等類別。最喜歡用壽山石制作印章的非乾隆帝莫屬，乾隆帝擁有的田黃石印章近千枚，現(xiàn)藏于故宮博物院、大名鼎鼎的《田黃三鏈章》就是其中較重要的一枚，該印是在一塊田黃石上刻制，并由兩根鏈條連接起來(lái)的三顆印章，技藝高超，堪稱國(guó)之瑰寶。
