清代機制銅圓的鑄造始于1900年，止于1911年。其鑄造流通的時間不長，只得十余年而已。但是在其發行流通時期，全國共有十九個省，二十多個錢局開機鑄造銅圓。
這些錢局鑄造的銅圓版式各不相同，甚至同一個錢局而不同時間鑄造的也是如此。僅僅以明顯區別來劃分，其版式就有數十種之多。若以細微區別劃分，其版式在百種以上。因此當代的銅圓收藏愛好者皆以搜尋不同版式的銅圓為樂事。
當時的清政府，鑒于各省鑄行銅元毫無節制，便開始著手整頓，試圖統一幣制，將鑄幣權收歸國有。隨即在天津設立的戶部造幣總廠開始鑄造新式銅元“大清銅幣”。并頒布了《整頓圜法章程十條》，其中規定：“銅元成色定為用九七紫銅，三厘白銅，原用聽錫一厘”。“重量定準當二十者重庫平四錢，當十者重庫平二錢，當五者重庫平一錢，當二者重庫平四分”。由此開始鑄造的大清銅幣，由戶部頒發祖模，只在正面加鑄省名一字，以便管理區分。
示的此枚大清銅幣，為“直”字款。錢幣正面珠圈內書“大清銅幣”四字直讀，正中陰刻一個“直”字。珠圈外上環書滿文，左右分書“丙”“午”二字紀年。兩側是“戶部”二字，下環鐫幣值“當制錢十文”。錢幣背面珠圈內鑄蟠龍紋飾，珠圈外上環書“光緒年造”，下環書英文，譯為“大清銅幣”。
“直”是“直隸”的簡稱，就是直接隸屬的意思，是一個舊省名，位置大概在今天的河北省。大清銅幣系列中，“直”字版較為少見，在收藏市場上自然也就更受人追捧。展示的此枚大清銅幣“直”字版，整體保存完好，幣面平整無殘缺，是一枚品相極好的精品收藏錢幣。幣面因為歲月侵蝕有了一層熟舊的包漿，歷史感極強，觀賞性極佳。在目前收藏市場的環境下，具有很高的收藏價值，潛力巨大。
