He and many painters at that time took the responsibility of reviving the orthodox school prevailing in the early Qing Dynasty, that is to say, he inherited the tradition of painters in Tang, song and Yuan Dynasties and made the weak orthodox school prosper after Qianlong. What is Zhang Daqian good at painting? This is Xu Beihong's evaluation of it.

張大千(1899~1983年),四川內江人,祖籍廣東省番禺。1899年(清光緒二十五年己亥)5月10日(農歷四月初一),他出生在四川省內江縣城郊安良里象鼻嘴堰塘灣的一個書香門第的家庭。原名張正權,又名爰,字季爰,號大千,別號大千居士,下里巴人、齋名大風堂。傳說其母在其降生之前,夜里夢一老翁送一小猿入宅,所以在他二十一歲的時候,改名猨,又名爰、季爰。后出家為僧,法號大千,所以世人也稱其為"大千居士"。張大千是二十世紀中國畫壇最具傳奇色彩的國畫大師,無論是繪畫、書法、篆刻、詩詞都無所不通。早期專心研習古人書畫,特別在山水畫方面卓有成就。后旅居海外,畫風工寫結合,重彩、水墨融為一體,尤其是潑墨與潑彩,開創了新的藝術風格。他的治學方法,值得那些試圖從傳統走向現代的畫家們借鑒。

Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), born in Neijiang, Sichuan Province, was born in Panyu, Guangdong Province. On May 10, 1899 (the 25th year of Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty), he was born into a family of literati in yantangwan, xiangbizui, Anliang, a suburb of Neijiang County, Sichuan Province. Its original name is Zhang Zhengquan, also known as "Yuan". It's called "Jiyuan". It's called "Daqian". It's not called "Daqian" as a monk. It's called "xialiba" and "Zhai" as an auditorium. It is said that his mother dreamed that an old man would send an ape to the house at night before he was born, so when he was 21 years old, he changed his name, which is also called Yuan and Ji Yuan. Later, he became a monk with the name of Daqian, so the world called him "Daqian monk". Zhang Daqian is the most legendary master of traditional Chinese painting in the 20th century. He is versatile in painting, calligraphy, seal cutting and poetry. In the early stage, I concentrated on studying ancient calligraphy and painting, especially in landscape painting. Later, living abroad, the combination of painting style, work and writing, and the integration of color and ink, especially ink splashing and color splashing, created a new artistic style. His research methods are worthy of drawing lessons from those painters who are trying to move from the traditional to the modern.

 

三十年代,他藝術更是趨于成熟,工筆寫意,俱臻妙境,于齊白石齊名,素有"南張北齊"之稱。1936年他被聘為南京中央大學美術系教授,在南京北京等地舉辦個人畫展。并在此時創作了傳世名作《中郎授女圖》(現藏于首都博物館)。然而抗日戰爭爆發了,很快日寇就占領了北平,燒殺,搶奪無惡不作,在面對民族存亡的關鍵時刻,大千表現出了作為一個中國知識分子的民族氣節:他拒絕了擔任日華藝術畫院院長及日偽北平藝術專科學校校長的職位,并拒絕了借出所藏明清書畫。由于在言論上表示了對日寇侵略罪行的不滿,被日本憲兵隊關押了一個多月。隨后他又回到了四川,這時的風格略脫八大山人、石濤的粗獷寫意而趨于唐寅、沈周的細潤華滋。

In the 1930s, his art became more and more mature, with fine brushwork and freehand brushwork. He was well-known as "Southern Zhangbei Qi" in Qi Baishi. In 1936, he was employed as a professor in the Department of fine arts of Nanjing Central University, and held individual art exhibitions in Nanjing, Beijing and other places. At the same time, he created a famous work, the picture of zhonglangshunv (now in the Capital Museum). However, with the outbreak of the Anti Japanese War, the Japanese invaders soon occupied Peiping, burned, killed and looted. In the face of the critical moment of national survival, Daqian showed his national integrity as a Chinese Intellectual: he refused to serve as the president of the nihua art and Painting Institute and the president of the puppet Peiping art college, and refused to lend the Ming and Qing calligraphy and paintings in his collection. He was detained for more than a month by the Japanese gendarmerie because he expressed his dissatisfaction with the Japanese aggressor's aggression. Then he went back to Sichuan. His style was a little different from the rough freehand brushwork of the eight great mountain people and Shi Tao, and tended to the delicate Chinese style of Tang Yin and Shen Zhou.

 

張大千早期的藝術風格以摹古為主,他曾用大量的時間和心血臨摹古人名作,特別是他臨仿石濤和八大山人的作品更是惟妙惟肖,幾近亂真,也由此邁出了他繪畫的第一步。他從清代石濤起筆,到八大山人,陳洪綬、徐渭等,進而廣涉明清諸大家,再到宋元,最后上溯到隋唐。他把歷代有代表性的畫家一一挑出,由近到遠,潛心研究。然而他對這些并不滿足,又向石窟藝術和民間藝術學習,尤其是敦煌面壁三年,臨摹了歷代壁畫,成就輝煌。這些壁畫以時間跨度論,歷經北魏、西魏、隋、唐、五代等朝代。如多年前香港市場中曾出現一件署名為元四大家之一的古畫,便是張大千“仿古作”,拍出接近200萬元的高價。

Zhang Daqian's early artistic style was mainly to imitate the ancient times. He used a lot of time and effort to copy the famous works of the ancients, especially the works of imitating Shitao and Badashan people, which were lifelike and almost unreal, and thus took the first step of his painting. From Shi Tao in Qing Dynasty to Badashan people, Chen Hongshou and Xu Wei, he extended to all the people in Ming and Qing Dynasties, then to song and Yuan Dynasties, and finally to Sui and Tang Dynasties. He selected the representative painters of all ages, and studied them from near to far. However, he was not satisfied with these, and learned from the grottoes and folk art, especially the Dunhuang face wall for three years, copying the frescoes of previous dynasties, and achieved brilliant achievements. These murals have experienced the Northern Wei, Western Wei, Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties. For example, many years ago in the Hong Kong market, there was an ancient painting signed as one of the four masters of the Yuan Dynasty. It was Zhang Daqian's "antique work", which was sold at a high price of nearly 2 million yuan.
