在十九世紀末，因為兩次失敗的鴉片戰爭以及太平天國事件的影響，清朝政府開始認識到西方堅船利炮的威力。在這時為了鎮壓太平天國，解除內憂外患，實現富國強兵、維護清朝統治力的目的，部分清朝官員開始主張學習西方的先進技術，由此展開了洋務運動。在其“師夷長技以制夷”思想指導下，輪船、火車、槍炮等都被歸入改革之列，而鑄幣業也受到了影響。
光緒十三年，兩廣總督張之洞向清政府奏請購置外國的鑄幣機器并得到批準。于是在購買了外國造幣設備后，在廣東率先設立錢局首鑄機制錢幣。廣東鑄幣試點成功之后，各省紛紛仿效購置國外機械鑄造錢幣。而誕生于此背景下的這一款錢幣，就是如今我們非常熟悉的“光緒元寶”。
光緒元寶是我國歷史上首款引進海外技術而鑄造的錢幣，這對于中國貨幣歷史來說，可謂是轉折性的一筆。光緒元寶系列錢幣版本眾多，富有收藏趣味性。而且其鑄造工藝也非常精湛，有相當高的觀賞價值。綜合以上因素，使得光緒元寶系列錢幣在今天的收藏市場上極為受人追捧。
文中展示此組光緒元寶分別為湖南省造和四川省造。由于是同系列錢幣，即使是不同省份鑄造的差別也不會太大。錢幣正面中央皆為標志性的“光緒元寶”四字，中心有滿文標注。珠圈上環為鑄造省份標識，下環為幣值標識。這兩枚都是“庫平七錢二分”。左右兩側各裝飾一朵小花，四川省造為四瓣花，湖南省造則為六瓣。錢幣背面都為蟠龍圖，上下環有英文標注。
此組光緒元寶保存完整，幣面平整。錢幣表面包漿熟舊自然，品相極佳。錢幣背面的蟠龍圖刻畫的非常精細，龍爪龍鱗清晰分明，觀賞性極高。由于此款錢幣發行流通時間不長，而后又歷經戰亂，遺失損毀，現今的存留量稀少，品相好的更是少見。所以在收藏市場上這類錢幣的價值一路走俏，未見頹勢，潛力極大，具有極高的收藏價值。

After the successful trial of coinage in guangdong province, each province followed suit to acquire foreign machinery for coinage. Born in this background of this piece of money, is now we are very familiar with the "guangxu ingot".
Guangxu yuanbao is the first coin minted by introducing overseas technology in China's history, which is a turning point in China's currency history. The paper shows that this group of guangxu ingots were made in hunan province and sichuan province respectively.
