在1911年12月辛亥革命后，已光復的17省代表在南京推選了孫中山先生為中華民國臨時大總統。于1912年1月，中華民國政府宣告正式成立，清朝覆滅，在中國持續2000多年的封建君主專制隨之結束。
在民國成立之后，為了彌補民國在建立之初貨幣制度上的欠缺，也為了解決當時貨幣流通市場上混亂的狀況，孫中山同意鑄造紀念幣以供市場流通需要。孫中山對于紀念幣提出了“中間應繪五谷模型，取豐歲足民之義，垂勸農務本之規”的要求，并且訓令財政部速制新模，分令各省造幣廠照式鼓鑄。不久，財政部就頒下新模給江南(南京)、湖北、廣東等造幣廠依式鑄造，這就是“中華民國孫中山像開國紀念幣”的由來。
