指墨畫，顧名思義就是用手指頭蘸墨作畫。起源于唐代張璪，成熟于清代高其佩，故被尊為中國指墨藝術之鼻祖也。其后擅用手指作畫者乃揚州八怪之一的李鱓，近代的潘天壽最為著名。在當代也有部分書畫大家擅用指畫來表達其內心世界對藝術的感受，如張立辰、吳悅石、郭石夫等人。指墨畫藝術是中國畫中不可分割的一部分，凡擅指墨畫者皆具備很扎實的傳統筆墨功夫，對傳統藝術中的用線和用墨都有很深的研究。

指畫的歷史久遠，《歷代名畫記》就記載了“以手摸絹素”“以頭髻取墨”的故事。而指畫創作，指頭蓄墨量小，不易寫長線，難于精細，畫面容易支離瑣碎，作畫難度頗高，因而指畫大家屈指可數。到了當代國畫巨匠潘天壽這里，指畫才得到了極高的美學認可。他把指頭畫和文人畫相結合，以蒼古雄渾的氣韻、厚重雋永的意境、豐富高超的技巧，將別人認為的雕蟲小技變成了一個具有宏大氣象的表現方法，使指畫成為中國畫中非常有特點、非常優秀的一類畫法。
