湖田窯是漢族傳統制瓷工藝中的珍品，位于今景德鎮市東南湖田村。是中國宋、元兩代各大制瓷規模最大，延續燒造時間最長、生產的瓷器最精美著名的古代窯場。遺址保存的遺物非常豐富，歷代古窯遍地，有宋末的“馬蹄窯”，明早中期的“葫蘆窯”等。在該遺址上建立起來的湖田古窯址陳列館，展示了在這里出土各種窯具和瓷器。1982年，湖田古瓷窯遺址被國務院列為第二批全國重點文物保護單位。
湖田窯瓷器從底足上看。真品青白瓷很少有底滿釉的，多為墊燒，由于胎土細潔，所以墊燒處多有黑褐色色斑。一般情況下是高圈足，足壁深且薄。而仿品胎土不致密，黑褐色色斑多為人為所做，很不自然且胎足發軟，為提高檔次還多有滿釉現象，正如這件仿品的底足一樣，圈足很矮，滿釉但無神。
此件湖田窯胭脂盒是婦女親身之物件，故也被看作女眷尤其宮廷妃嬪的代稱。器型玲瓏小巧，做工繁而精細，遠遠超出了現代人的現象。在具體的材質和形制中，或妖嬈、或沉靜、或嫵媚、或清靈，映照著一個個纏綿氤氳的寂寞春閨，代表著一個時代的精絕工藝。
