清咸豐年間(1851-1861年)，太平天國農民起義開展迅猛，并在江蘇南京建都，此刻清政府賴以鑄錢之用的滇銅，因路途阻斷而無法運進北京。一方面是打壓起義急需許多的軍餉開支，一方面是鑄錢的原材料告缺，給清政府造成了嚴峻的財務困難，最終迫使清政府自咸豐三年開端發行紙幣和改鑄大錢來補償財務虧空。咸豐朝寶泉局所鑄錢有“當百”、“當二百”、“當三百”、“當五百”、“當千”等五種面值。
