崇寧重寶鑄于北宋徽宗崇寧年間（公元1102年~1106年），材質有銅、鐵、銀。 崇寧重寶為隸書銅、鐵大錢，制作多亦精好，存世較多。另有崇寧通寶錢文為徽宗御書瘦金體，鐵劃銀鉤，深具骨秀格清之氣韻，書法超妙絕倫，堪稱幣文楷書之顛峰。世人評此為“宋代第一泉”，宋徽宗與王莽并稱中國錢法

關于此錢，有一個傳說，謂其面文為蔡京所書，而蔡京書寫時別有用心地將“崇”字的山和宗的豎筆上下貫通，連成一線；將“寧”字繁體之中的“心”省略，被人指責為“有意破宋，無心寧國”。“崇寧”錢存世尚多，版別亦多，但迄今并未發現有如上所說這種寫法的錢幣。自然也有根據以上說法造假的，但那很容易辨別出來。因此這段傳說得不到印證，至今仍是一個謎。

崇寧重寶鑄造背景

公元1100年1月，北宋皇帝哲宗病故，由其弟趙佶接替做了北宋第八任皇帝，為宋徽宗。徽宗“性甚機巧，優于技藝”，終日沉迷于書法繪畫，不理朝綱。他在位25年，先后鑄造了圣宋通寶、崇寧通寶（重寶）、大觀通寶、政和通寶（重寶）、重和通寶、宣和通寶（元寶）等6種錢幣，其中崇寧通寶和大觀通寶的錢文是徽宗御筆親書的瘦金體。令人叫絕的是折十型瘦金書體的崇寧通寶，青銅精制，文字骨秀格清，令人愛不釋手。

北宋徽宗趙佶于崇寧二年（公元1103年），為解困開始鑄造崇寧通寶和崇寧重寶折十對錢，崇寧五年（公元1106年）停鑄。短短四年，崇寧大錢鑄量巨大，造成北宋晚期經濟陷于混亂，百姓和商家均不愿接受崇寧大錢，最后，崇寧大錢由當十降至當二使用。
Zhao Ji, Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty, began to cast ten pairs of Chongning Tongbao and Chongning chongbao in the second year of Chongning (A.D. 1103), and stopped casting in the fifth year of Chongning (A.D. 1106). 崇寧重寶每一枚重量在10克上下，相當于崇寧通寶小平錢3枚的重量，但是它要當10枚小平錢花，當時百姓把小錢貯藏起來或被銷鑄為當十大錢，造成小錢奇缺。至今，想覓到崇寧通寶小平錢較難，正常品相的都在在千元以上。崇寧重寶也有小錢，錢體輕薄，直徑26毫米至27毫米，重量在2.5克~3.8克之間，據說當折二錢使用。
