范曾是江蘇南通人,于1938年出生,從小就學(xué)習(xí)歷史、文學(xué)和繪畫,先后拜過多位名人為師,有吳作人、李可染、蔣兆和、李苦禪等諸位名家,深得他們的真?zhèn)鳌?/p>

1962年范曾在畢業(yè)之后就被分配到了中國歷史博物館工作,在1970年代末期的時(shí)候在中央工藝美術(shù)學(xué)院任教。在后來不久的時(shí)間里他又籌建南開大學(xué)東方藝術(shù)系,擔(dān)任主任的職位。范曾的歷史人物畫非常的清新典雅,瀟灑飄逸,生動(dòng)自然,1979年他第一次到訪了日本,被日本贊譽(yù)為中國近代十大畫家之一,此后,他又先后在香港、日本等多個(gè)地方舉辦了個(gè)人畫展。在1989年的時(shí)候他曾經(jīng)到法國居住,之后又回到南開大學(xué)任教。

范曾人物畫作品在1980年的時(shí)候非常的紅火,曾經(jīng)售賣出一幅四尺整紙17萬元的高價(jià)。在當(dāng)時(shí)的日本和香港、臺(tái)灣地區(qū)的畫廊投資者也都爭相購買范曾的作品,一時(shí)間洛陽紙的價(jià)格非常的昂貴,而范曾的畫作也是一路上漲,1989年5月8日,臺(tái)灣高雄的畫廊被竊,正在參展的二十七幅“范曾畫展”作品都被偷走了。

范曾作畫主張用石濤“一畫論”之精義,力追天籟之境,精于白描,尤喜寫意人物。為表現(xiàn)歷史人物之神韻,他潛心研究歷史,悉心揣摩古今中外諸名家之作,他特別推崇陳老蓮和任伯年。范曾的歷史人物畫清新典雅,瀟灑飄逸,栩栩如生。
