民國元年4月，四川成都造幣廠奉軍政府之令，更換前清龍紋舊模，雕版民國銅元新款，正式開鑄“軍政府造四川銅幣”。開鑄之初僅發行十文、二十文兩種錢幣。同年5月，又添鑄當五十文一種，當年計鑄十文銅元6055萬余枚，二十文銅元935萬余枚，五十文銅元1247萬余枚。民國2年，除繼續鑄造十文、二十文、五十文銅元之外，又增鑄重五錢八分的一百文銅元。
1918年，曾新鑄少量“軍政府造四川銅幣”。其中軍政府造五文幣面與其他面值四川銅幣完全相同，而幣背則改為交叉雙旗圖案。紀年仍鐫“民國元年”。四川銅幣二十文亦有幣背為篆書“漢”字加十八圈者存世.數量極少，當為其開鑄時之樣幣，后未批量發行。
