1912年是中華民國成立的開始，舉國上下民主人士齊心和合作1912年元月，各方民主力量經過幾十年的斗爭后，終于戰勝了封建清政府，在列強壓迫，內戰不斷的環境下，和平易幟，交接政權。

為了紀念這件翻天覆地的大事，國民政府決定鑄銀元紀念。1912年的民元國會。選舉孫中山為第一領導人。鑄造的首批銀元以孫中山頭像為背景圖案。首鑄幣背面六角星，鏤空麥穗圍繞。這批銀元為首鑄的一批，發行有限，僅有40000枚，當年即被換購收藏一空。

此錢幣正面中央為孫中山側面肖像，邊緣內上鐫中文隸書體“中華民國”四字，下鐫“開國紀念幣”五字，左右長枝花飾。背面中央為中文隸書體“壹圓”及嘉禾，邊緣英文“中華民國”、壹圓”。左右分列六角星，直線邊齒，纖長細膩。此幣包漿老道，歷史留下的痕跡清晰可見，其無論文字和紋飾，皆十分精到，凸凹鮮明，文字筆劃和紋飾線條圓滾，顯示模具沖壓著力深打，致其品相精美無比，其工藝水準也是至今之偽所不能矣。整幣鑄造精良，熟舊自然，色澤明亮，設計別致，邊齒過關，是錢幣中的精品
