高古玉器(漢代前)的取材,有的源于地方玉,有的來自新疆的和闐玉,大都取材于河床中的籽料或山流水料,這兩種玉料因剝離礦床時間很久,在不同的外界環境下,其自身已形成了玉皮和沁色。但是古人制玉卻認為皮和沁全是雜質而將其去掉只保留玉的精華部分、(商代的一些小動物留有玉皮及巧色)高古玉器大部分都帶有沁色。玉質的不同、地域不同、土壤的環境不同、埋藏的時間不同等因素造成玉的沁色也不同,有時一件玉器上會有幾種沁色。分辨古玉的各種沁色可以斷定古玉的真偽。我們如今看到真古玉的沁色都是成器后沁入的。高古玉多為帝王皇家達官貴人用玉,從用料、制作工藝、文化氣息上有著厚重深奧的內涵。除了欣賞古人的琢玉技藝、品味高古玉中神韻飛揚的歷史文化內涵以外,把玩一塊高古玉,就像品讀著年代久遠的歷史的傳奇,手中古玉演繹的人間故事隱約可觀,古意融融,人玉靈通,把玩者的心境是不可以用語言表述的。價值不菲的高古玉,琢制技藝十分精湛,無論是淺浮雕、透雕,還是陰線刻畫,均拙樸細精,實其中的“漢八刀”和雙溝碾法(又稱“游絲毛雕”)如今更是難以模仿。
