光緒十三年（1887年）兩廣總督張之洞看到大量外國銀幣流入中國，充斥市場(chǎng)，擾亂經(jīng)濟(jì)，遂奏請(qǐng)朝廷自鑄銀幣，以謀抵制。光緒十五年（1889年）清政府批準(zhǔn)由廣東銀元局試鑄銀幣，光緒16年（1890）廣東錢局首鑄庫平七錢三分銀幣，幣文出自當(dāng)朝金石書法名家吳大澄之手，銀幣正面書光緒元寶，外以英文環(huán)繞，背面鑄龍紋，外以中文環(huán)繞。這種英文、中文的配置方式與往后各省所鑄的銀元正好相反，故而俗稱“七三反版”。

七錢三分系列的生產(chǎn)時(shí)間很短，估計(jì)因設(shè)備安裝初期“機(jī)器尚未全開，工匠亦未募足，而且諸少熟手”，實(shí)際制成的數(shù)量有限。但由原奏中擬“先鑄一百萬圓”以及1890年5月七二系列流通版銀圓正式生產(chǎn)之日起，至1891年12月31日止制成總數(shù)及金額的記載，結(jié)合目前收藏市場(chǎng)上所見來逆向推測(cè)，以稀少度而言，“一圓”主幣與“五角”兩種最少，產(chǎn)量可能各僅數(shù)萬枚，其次是“二角”，“五分”則稍多，最多的是“一角”。然而“七三系列”因含銀較多適得其反，大半被回爐改制，故整體存世量不多。
